Artist Biography

A man sitting on a log in a snow-covered landscape with trees, a small creek, and a cloudy sky.

John Doyle

John Doyle has spent over five decades painting the Canadian landscape. Born in Toronto in 1950, he studied Fine Arts at York University, graduating in 1973, and has been working in acrylic on canvas ever since.

His paintings don't document places so much as feel them. Fields, forests, shorelines, and skies are rendered in bold colour and expressive brushwork, capturing something just beyond the literal: the weight of a cloudy afternoon, the particular quiet of an open field. Over the years, his palette has grown more audacious, his mark-making more confident.

"Nature for me is a deeply moving primordial force, a raw power, both menacing and beautiful. Mysterious. Silent. Magical. A pleasure tinged with melancholy with a hidden content, slowly released."

John Doyle's work is held in private and corporate collections across North America and Europe. He exhibits regularly at Ingram Gallery in Toronto, where he has shown new work annually for over a decade, with his most recent solo exhibition, Distillations, presented in September 2025.
